The ARTIST

Hello, and thank you for stopping by.

My name is Mari Diaz. I live in the Bronx, New York, where I was born and raised. I am a self-taught artist and a perpetual maker. Painting, drawing, and photography are my primary mediums, but I also do graphic design and hand-sewn masks. No matter what medium I play in, I create art to amplify beauty, joy, love, and peace.

Since the pandemic, I have felt a renewed sense of purpose. I took my sewing machine out of storage and started making hand-sewn masks. I made dozens, giving them away to friends and family to road test. They gave me feedback, which helped me refine the design until I found one that feels comfortable, light, and breathable to all those who wear it. Each is adjustable and features 2-layers of 100% cotton, fun fabric, and artful, hand-sewn details. I enjoy contributing to public safety and helping people show respect for others, with style.

So how did I come up with the name of my online art exhibit? Mimaya was a name given to me by my adopted Ethiopian daughter when she learned to pronounce my name. I initially asked her to call me "Mi Mari" so I would be "her Mari", but she kept saying "Mimaya" instead. It stuck. I looked it up and discovered that in Amharic, "Maya" means "lens that helps to see further." "Maya" has many other meanings too. In Brazilian Native Indian, it means"mother". In Sanskrit, it means "illusion." In Nepali, it means 'love."

Speaking of which, I’d love to create an original work of art for you. If your soul desires a unique pop art masterpiece of your loved one (pets included, of course), an artsy, hand-sewn mask, or an off-the-hook iconic image painted on the back of your favorite jean jacket –

I'm here for you.

Feel free to reach out with any inquiries or to ask about commissions.

Share the love. #IAmMimaya
